On the advice of her mother, Hazel Grace Lancaster, seventeen years old, reluctantly goes to a cancer support group patients. To breathe normally, she uses a portable oxygen pump due to her cancer. She meets a boy at one of her meetings , and learns his name is Augustus Waters. He is there to support Isaac who is a mutual friend. Isaac was diagnosed with an canceroustumor within his left eye. This he had successfully removed. He now has to have the opposite eye taken out. Augustus comes to Hazel following the meeting , and tells her that the tumor is in one eye. He invites Hazel to come to his home to watch the movie. The two go over each other's experienceswith breast cancer. Hazel discovers she has thyroid cancer and it has expanded to her lung. Augustus has been diagnosed as having osteosarcoma and is now cancer-free. Augustus and Hazel decide to share their favorite novels before they take Hazel home. Augustus provides Hazel the Price of Dawn and Hazel suggests an Imperial Fliction.
Hazel describes the beauty of An Inexplicable Affliction. It's a book about Anna an infant girl with cancer. This is the only book she's ever read that reflects her experiences. She explains how the novel abruptly closes in the middle of the sentence and leaves the reader with no closureas the the fates of the characters. She speculates on Peter Van Houten's mysterious author of the novel, who she believes fled Amsterdam shortly after publication. He has not been in contact since.
Augustus miraculously tells Hazel that he came across Van Houten's assistant Lidewij and was successful in establishing an email communication with her. Hazel shares Van Houten's letter with the other, and they come up with a list of questions for Van Houten questions. This is a way to make clear the novel's confusing conclusion. Hazel is the most worried over Anna's future. She believes that Anna's mother will be able to survive the loss of her daughter and that her parents will be fine after Hazel's passing. Van Houten finally replies that he can only respond to Hazel's inquiries in person. He invites her visit if she's ever visiting Amsterdam.
Augustus invites Hazel for a lunch soon after. He turns out that he has planned a picnic with a Dutch theme. He discovers that Van Houten, a charitable organization which grants wishes to children diagnosed with cancer, has offered to grant his wish. He touches her face , and she is delighted. She realizes she loves her, but she's sure that she'll hurt him when she dies. She compares herself to a bomb.
Hazel experiences the ailment of a serious episodeof the fluid accumulation within her lungs. She is admitted to an ICU. After a few days Hazel gets released from the hospital and learns that Augustus has not left the hospital's waiting area. Hazel receives a second letter from Van Houten. This one is more personal and obscure. Hazel is now more determined to travel to Amsterdam than ever after having read the letter. But there's a issue: her parents and team of doctors don't believe she is strong enough to travel. The situation is hopeless until the doctor. Maria, one of her most experienced doctors, is able to convince Hazel that she should travel to the freedom to live her life.
Augustus, Hazel and Hazel's mother have plans to travel to Amsterdam. But When Hazel as well as Augustus begin to meet van Houten for the first time, they find that he's not a brilliant genius, but a sly drunk who cannot answer the questions of Hazel. They leave Van Huouten's bar in complete disappointment and are accompanied by Lidewij who is astonished by Van Houten's behavior. Augustus and Hazel share a passionate kiss at the conclusion of their tour to the cheers of the spectators. They head back to their hotel when they reunite with each other for the first time. Hazel discovers the fact that Augustus has been a grenade, when the two return to Indianapolis. The state worsensand it is evident that he has lost his charisma and confidence. Even though he's more vulnerable and scared however, he remains an attractive boy to Hazel. Hazel stops calling him Augustus, and instead calls him Gus as his parents. Hazel discovers that she is in love with him. Augustus's condition deteriorates quickly. Augustus hosts a prefuneral, with a prefuneral service. Isaac and Hazel provide eulogies. Hazel uses a quote from Van Huyten about bigger and smaller infinity. She tells Augustus that she is incredibly happy for her and how she would never wish to miss their short time together.
Augustus dies eight days later. Hazel is shocked to be greeted by Van Houten in her funeral. Van Houten explained his explanation that Gus and he kept in touch and that Augustus requested that Van Houten rectify the mistake he made on his trip that he took to Amsterdam. Van Houten added his wife Hazel was required to attend his funeral. Van Houten reveals Anna's fate abstractly, however Hazel doesn't care. Hazel gets informed by Isaac the next day that Augustus had written something for her. When Hazel is trying to locate the manuscript when she returns, Van Houten is seen again. He tells Hazel drunk that Anna was the name of his daughter. When she was eight years old, she died from cancer. an Imperial Abilities was his literary attempt to reconcile himself to her passing. Van Houten is advised by Hazel to go to a sober place and begin writing a new book.
Hazel discovers later she was Augustus had delivered the pages directly to Van Houten in order for VanHouten to write a thoughtful tribute to Hazel. Lidewij has Van Houten read the book, and then he sends them to Hazel. Hazel finishes the novel by reading the words of Augustus. He pointed out that while it's normal to be injured in the world, we also have the option of choosing to allow others to take the same actions. And he was very happy with his choice. He hopes that she will enjoy her decision. Hazel says that she likes the ending of the novel.
